WATER QUALITY MONITORING

Since 2008, Conservation Lac Brome has been monitoring the water quality of the six main tributaries feeding into Brome Lake: the Quilliams, McLaughlin, Argyll, Coldbrook, Pearson, and Inverness streams. Monitoring each tributary helps identify sources of contamination affecting the lake. In addition, water quality assessments are conducted directly on the lake to determine its level of eutrophication and the overall health of its ecosystem.

Annual Water Quality Monitoring Reports

Water quality data collected through our monitoring program are shared on DataStream, an open-data platform dedicated to freshwater ecosystems. By making this information publicly accessible, we promote transparency, collaboration, and a better understanding of the health of our lakes and waterways.

Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are photosynthetic bacteria that occur naturally in bodies of water. They become problematic when they multiply too quickly and form surface scums or blooms on the water. To identify them, they may appear as a soup-like mixture of particles resembling peas, broccoli, or filamentous strands. Some blooms can spread across an entire body of water, while others affect only a specific area, such as a bay within a lake.

The factors that promote their proliferation are numerous:

High water temperature

Water stagnation

Climate change

Excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus)

Cyanobacteria need nutrients to grow, and the main factor that often enables them to form such large blooms is an excess of phosphorus.

Several species of cyanobacteria produce cyanotoxins that can be harmful to animal health, including human health. Exposure to these toxins can occur through the ingestion of contaminated water or through skin contact with a cyanobacterial bloom. The effects of exposure to blooms vary and may include skin irritation, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and other symptoms (Gouvernement du Canada, Santé, 2024).

If you see a cyanobacterial bloom, it is recommended that you avoid swimming and ensure that your pets do not drink water from the lake.

If you observe a cyanobacterial bloom, it is important to report it to the provincial ministry, the municipality, and/or the local water protection committee.

Lake water quality measurement

The lake water sampling protocol follows guidelines developed by the Lake Monitoring Network (RSVL). This approach is used to document water quality with regard to eutrophication.  The three variables analyzed within the framework of this program are:

  • Total phosphorus (TP), this nutrient essential for the existence and growth of aquatic plants, is generally found in low concentrations in lakes.   However, this item has the highest need/availability ratio, around 80,000; this is why it is said to be a limiting factor in the growth of aquatic plants. This explains all the attention paid by lake protection associations to the control and reduction of phosphorus inputs. The phosphorus concentration of a young lake is 5 ug/l, for Brome Lake the readings we have are in the range of 12 ug/l to 18ug/l.

  • Chlorophyll is a green pigment that is found in the composition of plants.   By measuring the concentration of chlorophyll, we have a good indicator of the biomass of the algae present in the water column. Again, the more dissolved phosphorus there is in the water column, the more algae there is, and the higher the chlorophyll level will be.   Eutrophic lakes often struggle with an overabundance of algae.   The chlorophyll level measured at Brome Lake is 10 ug/l, which places it at the lower limit of the eutrophic zone.

Dissolved organic carbon arises from the decomposition of organisms. The measurement of dissolved organic carbon makes it possible to have an appreciation of the color of the water, which also affects its transparency. Therefore, the presence of living algae, such as those that are decomposing, influences the transparency of the water.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus (P) is the determining element for the proliferation of cyanobacteria. To avoid water degradation, it is essential to reduce its intake.

But nature does things well. Phosphorus is an element present in nature in very limited quantities. Its contribution is essential to the growth of living organisms, just like nitrogen (N) and potassium (K).

Unfortunately, human activity disrupts the natural phosphorus cycle with the result that too much phosphorus ends up in water bodies, altering the natural balance and causing biomass (aquatic plants, cyanobacteria, etc.) is abnormally stimulated (we often speak of a ratio of 1 to 500, that is to say that 1 kg of phosphorus can lead to the production of 500 kg of biomass). We will say that the lake is too productive and that its aging is accelerated (eutrophication).

The main
sources of phosphorus contaminating
streams and lakes

Phosphorus can be particulate or soluble (dissolved). Most of the time (70% to 90%), it is particulate and attaches itself to fine soil particles, which are carried by water runoff towards watercourses.  The sources of phosphorus production are numerous and most of the time anthropogenic (by man).

The main sources of phosphorus inputs
to the lake

Sediment already present in the lake contains large amounts of phosphorus, a result of past carelessness. This phosphorus, under certain conditions, can be released into the water column and become available again for plants and algae.

The salt accumulates
in fresh water

The tons of salt spread on the roads of Quebec this winter have not disappeared. As the snow melted, much of it ended up in freshwater lakes and rivers.
