I take care of my lake
Conservation Lac Brome is launching a new program designed to recognize and reward residents whose landscaping actively contributes to the protection of our lake. By participating, you become part of a collective movement focused on community pride and the health of our ecosystem.
Inspired by the Lake Wise program in Vermont, LakeSmart in Maine, and Joignez le Réseau in Quebec, this initiative aims to increase the visibility of ecological services through peer influence by building a movement, fostering a supportive community, and showcasing best landscaping practices.

The I take care of my lake certification includes two components:
Sustainable stormwater management
This component evaluates several ecological services. Downspouts, landscape design, climate regulation, biodiversity, and erosion control are all important factors considered for certification.

Vegetated shoreline buffer
This component evaluates the depth of the shoreline buffer, biodiversity, shoreline stabilization, water cooling, as well as pollutant filtration and runoff reduction.

Do you care about the health of Brome Lake?
Why does it matter?
Protecting the lake is a shared responsibility. The health of Brome Lake’s ecosystem depends directly on how we develop and manage the surrounding landscape. Every property within its watershed—whether located directly on the shoreline or farther away—has an impact on water quality. Effective stormwater management at its source, combined with the preservation of vegetated and functional shoreline buffers, is one of the best ways to:
-
Capture and filter pollutants at their source
-
Protect and stabilize shorelines against erosion
-
Reduce nutrient-laden runoff that can harm water quality
-
Support biodiversity and natural habitats
-
Improve water infiltration and replenish soils
-
Limit water warming and help preserve aquatic ecosystems
-
Reduce sedimentation and prevent excessive algae growth
